English Teacher at St. Mary's High School

My Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher, I see it as my responsibility to make sure every student leaves my class with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their future goals. English is, in my slightly-biased opinion, one of the most important subjects taught to students as it gives students the skills needed to make their voices heard and understood in the larger world.
Role of the teacher
-
Treat every student with equal care and respect
-
Expose students to voices they might not otherwise encounter
-
Clarify the importance of English-related skills
-
Be conscious of students' lives outside of the classroom
-
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to better support students
Role of the student
-
Come to class ready to learn
-
Ask questions when the purpose of something is unclear or there is a gap in understanding
-
Communicate honestly with the teacher (she can only help if she knows what's going on)
-
Regularly set new and higher goals for oneself
Role of families
-
Support students by keeping the teacher updated on events or issues that might affect the student's performance in class
-
Be aware of students' goals/sense of success in the class
-
Feel comfortable to contact the teacher with any concerns
-
Trust that communication from the teacher is not inherently bad news
role of the community
-
Support students and teacher by keeping policies clear and consistent
-
Do their best to keep students and teachers safe and healthy
-
Communicate important issues to families, students, and teachers
-
Support all members of the community as best they can
